Last updated: October 2026 · Plans, prices and model details checked against Claude’s official pricing page, Anthropic’s announcements and Claude’s help center release notes.
Claude, made by Anthropic, has quietly become one of the most complete AI assistants you can pay for. In the space of a few weeks it got a new flagship model (Opus 5.5, released September 22, 2026), a faster everyday model (Sonnet 5.5, September 28) and a merged chat-plus-agent experience that lets you ask a quick question or hand off a whole task in the same window.
That also makes it confusing. There are now four model families (Haiku, Sonnet, Opus and Fable), five plan types and usage limits measured in “5-hour sessions” rather than messages. This review explains what Claude actually does well, where it falls short, what each plan costs, and who should pay for it. If you are still choosing between the big three assistants, our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison is a good companion read.

What Is Claude?
Claude is a general-purpose AI assistant available on the web, desktop apps, mobile apps and through an API for developers. You can use it to write and edit, research a topic with live web search, analyze spreadsheets and PDFs, write and run code, and build small interactive pages called Artifacts.
Since mid-September 2026, chat and Cowork (Claude’s agent mode, which can work through multi-step tasks on its own) are one experience. You no longer pick a mode: you type a question and get an answer, or describe a bigger job and Claude plans it, uses tools and comes back with the finished output. Slides, documents and visual designs can now be created in any conversation, according to Claude’s release notes.
The Models: Haiku, Sonnet, Opus and Fable
Which model you get depends on your plan, so it helps to know what each one is for.
Sonnet 5.5 (the everyday default)
Released September 28, 2026, Sonnet 5.5 is described by Anthropic as a faster, lower-cost complement to Opus 5.5. It now powers the free tier on claude.ai, which makes Claude’s free plan noticeably stronger than it was a few months ago. Independent coverage notes it performs close to Opus on many coding tasks.
Opus 5.5 (the flagship most people will use)
Opus 5.5 arrived on September 22, 2026. Anthropic positions it as its strongest model for agentic coding, computer use and knowledge work, and says it costs about 40% less to run than Opus 5 while generating output more than 30% faster. Anthropic also says its answers use less jargon and put the important information first. Opus is available on Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans.
Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 (the premium tier)
Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 launched on September 1, 2026 as Anthropic’s most advanced models for coding and knowledge work. They are expensive to run, so access is limited. On Max plans and premium Team or Enterprise seats you can spend up to 50% of your weekly usage on Fable at no extra cost. On Pro and standard seats, Fable is not included in your plan’s limits; you pay for it with usage credits. A promotion that included Fable 5 on Pro ended in July 2026.
Haiku
Haiku is the small, cheap, fast model. It matters mostly to developers using the API for high-volume jobs.
Key Features
Writing and editing
Claude’s writing has long been its best-known strength: it follows tone instructions well, handles long documents without losing the thread, and is good at editing rather than just rewriting. It is a strong pick for drafts, reports, emails and rewriting messy notes into something readable. See how it compares with dedicated tools in our best AI writing tools guide.
Research and web search
All plans include web search. Pro and above add Research, which runs a longer, multi-step investigation across many sources and returns a cited report. For quick fact lookups a dedicated answer engine can be faster; our Perplexity review covers that option.
Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic’s coding agent. It works in your terminal, IDE, desktop app or browser, reads a codebase, edits files, runs commands and tests, and can work through larger changes on its own. It is included with Pro and above, and it is one of the main reasons developers move to Max: heavy coding sessions burn through Pro limits quickly.
Artifacts, Design, Slides and Docs
Artifacts let Claude build small apps, dashboards, charts and pages you can view and share. Paid plans add Claude Design, Slides and Docs, so you can ask for a presentation or a formatted document and edit the result directly instead of copying text into another app.
Memory and Projects
Claude can remember useful details across conversations. In August 2026 memory was extended across chat and Cowork, with editable topics so you can see and correct what it keeps. Projects (Pro and above) let you group chats with shared files and instructions, which is useful for ongoing client or study work.
Connectors and integrations
Claude can connect to apps such as Gmail, Google Drive, Slack and many others through connectors, so it can read your real documents or draft replies in context. Paid plans add a Chrome extension and Microsoft 365 integration. A Salesforce integration entered beta in September 2026 for business users.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- Excellent writing and editing quality, with natural tone control
- Strong coding agent (Claude Code) included from the $20 Pro plan
- Free plan is now powered by Sonnet 5.5 and includes web search, memory and file creation
- One window for quick questions and long, multi-step tasks
- Can produce real outputs (slides, docs, designs, spreadsheets) rather than only text
- Clear business path, from Team seats up to HIPAA-ready Enterprise
Cons
- Usage limits are measured per 5-hour session and weekly, which is harder to predict than a simple message count
- The best models (Fable) cost extra on Pro
- No built-in image generation like ChatGPT or Gemini offer
- Agentic tasks can consume a lot of usage, so Pro users may hit limits on busy days
- The lineup of models and plans changes often, which can be confusing
Claude Pricing Explained
Free ($0)
Good for trying Claude or occasional use. You get chat on web, desktop and mobile, web search, file creation, code execution, memory, app connections and Artifacts. Limits are tighter than paid plans and reset per session.
Pro ($20/month or $200/year)
About five times the Free plan’s usage per 5-hour session, plus Claude Code, Research, Projects, Opus models, Claude Design/Slides/Docs, the Chrome extension and Microsoft 365 integration. Paying yearly works out to about $17 a month. This is the plan most individuals should start with. It costs the same as ChatGPT Plus; see our ChatGPT Plus review for that side of the comparison.
Max ($100 or $200/month)
Max comes in two tiers: 5x or 20x Pro’s usage per session. You also get higher output limits, priority access during busy periods, early access to new features and Fable models included within your weekly limits. It is aimed at developers and people who use Claude for most of their working day.
Team
Standard seats cost $20 per seat per month billed annually or $25 monthly, with more usage than Pro. Premium seats cost $100 annually or $125 monthly per seat, with five times standard usage, SSO, enterprise search and Fable access.
Enterprise
Self-serve Enterprise starts at $20 per seat per month plus usage at API rates, billed annually. It adds SCIM, audit logs, a compliance API, custom data retention and a HIPAA-ready configuration. A sales-assisted version adds onboarding and support.
API pricing (for developers)
Per million tokens, Opus 5.5 costs $4 input and $20 output, Sonnet 5.5 costs $2 input and $10 output, and Haiku 4.5 costs $1 input and $5 output. Batch processing saves 50%.
Who Should Use Claude?
- Writers, marketers and consultants: Claude Pro is one of the best value tools for drafting, editing and turning research into polished documents.
- Developers: Start on Pro to try Claude Code; move to Max if you hit limits regularly.
- Students and researchers: The free plan is now capable enough for most coursework, and Research on Pro is useful for literature-style reviews (always check the cited sources).
- Small businesses: Team seats give shared projects and admin controls. For a wider toolkit, see our best AI tools for small business.
- People who need images: Claude is not the right main tool; pair it with an image generator.
Verdict: Is Claude Worth It?
For most people who write, research or code, yes. The free plan is a genuinely useful starting point now that it runs on Sonnet 5.5, and Pro at $20 a month adds Opus 5.5, Claude Code, Research and document creation, which is a lot for the price. Upgrade to Max only if you regularly run out of usage or want Fable included. If you mainly want image generation or deep Google Workspace integration, ChatGPT or Gemini may suit you better, but as a thinking and writing partner Claude is among the best available in 2026.
