OpenAI has just made GPT-6 the default chat model for every ChatGPT user, including people on the free plan. On October 7, 2026 it started rolling out a new GPT-6 model to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise accounts, with Free and Go users following a day later. At the same time it launched Intelligent UI, a new way for ChatGPT to answer with charts, maps, buttons, forms and small working tools instead of only text.

Here is what actually changed, which GPT-6 model you get on each plan, what it costs, and whether you need to do anything.

At a Glance

Plan Price (US) Default GPT-6 model in Chat When
Free $0 GPT-6 Luna From Oct 8
Go $8/month GPT-6 Luna From Oct 8
Plus $20/month GPT-6 Sol (plus access to GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol) From Oct 7
Pro From $100/month GPT-6 Sol, with GPT-6 Astra for Pro reasoning From Oct 7
Business / Enterprise Per seat / contact sales GPT-6 Sol (Enterprise depends on admin settings) From Oct 7

Prices are OpenAI’s US list prices; in Europe, VAT and local pricing can change the final amount, so check the checkout page in your country.

What OpenAI announced

OpenAI released its first GPT-6 models to paid customers in September. This week’s update is different: it puts GPT-6 into the everyday Chat tab for everyone, which OpenAI says reaches more than 1.2 billion weekly users. There is nothing to switch on; the new model appears as the rollout reaches your account.

There are two chat models:

  • GPT-6 Sol powers Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise.
  • GPT-6 Luna powers Free and Go. It is OpenAI’s lighter, cheaper GPT-6 model.

OpenAI says both are tuned for everyday conversation. The update only covers Chat: the models behind ChatGPT’s Work mode and Codex are unchanged.

Faster answers and better search decisions

According to OpenAI’s own internal tests, GPT-6 can start replying before it finishes thinking. For questions that need a web search, GPT-6 Instant begins answering about 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. OpenAI also says GPT-6 is better at deciding when to search and at finding supporting information. These are company claims, not independent benchmarks, so treat them as a direction rather than a guarantee.

Safety changes

OpenAI says GPT-6 resists jailbreak attempts more strongly, especially over multi-turn conversations, while refusing fewer harmless requests. It also says the model is more honest about what it doesn’t know or can’t do. Details are in the GPT-6 system card.

What Intelligent UI does

Until now ChatGPT has mostly answered in text, with the occasional image or table. Intelligent UI lets the model decide that a visual or interactive answer would help more, and build it on the fly. OpenAI’s examples include:

  • a cooking timeline for a Sunday roast;
  • a road trip shown as stops on a map;
  • interactive explainers (for example, the Monty Hall problem or how GDP works) where you change inputs and watch the result;
  • small tools built on request, like a bill splitter, a retirement savings calculator or a simple game;
  • a product breakdown with tabs, such as the parts of a 7-speed bicycle.

Under the hood, OpenAI built a library of native components and a compiler that draws the interface progressively while the answer is still being generated, so you don’t wait for the whole thing. Simple questions still get a plain text reply. TechCrunch reports you can turn down the amount of visuals in your settings if you prefer text.

OpenAI is open about the limits: it says there is “still work ahead to improve the model’s design judgment,” so expect the occasional chart you didn’t need.

Pros

  • Free users get a GPT-6-generation model at no cost.
  • Interactive answers are useful for planning, budgeting and learning.
  • No setup: it just appears in Chat.
  • Faster first response on search questions, per OpenAI.

Cons

  • Free and Go get Luna, not the stronger Sol model.
  • Visual answers can be overkill for quick questions (you can reduce them).
  • Speed and quality figures are OpenAI’s own and not yet independently verified.
  • Enterprise users may not see it until an admin enables it.

Who should care

  • Free users: this is the biggest win. You get a noticeably newer model and the new interactive answers without paying. If you were thinking about upgrading only for a better everyday model, try the free version first.
  • Plus subscribers: Sol becomes your default, and you keep access to the heavier GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol models for harder work. Our ChatGPT Plus review covers whether $20 a month is worth it.
  • Students and teachers: interactive explainers and calculators are a genuinely good fit for learning. See our best AI tools for students for how ChatGPT compares with other study tools.
  • Businesses: Business seats get Sol now; Enterprise admins should check workspace settings before staff expect it.

How it compares with Gemini and Claude right now

The timing is notable. Google is cutting its free Gemini tier to Flash-Lite on October 9 (see our Gemini free tier explainer), while OpenAI is moving free users up to a GPT-6 model. Claude still focuses on writing quality and long documents rather than interactive visuals. If you are choosing one assistant to pay for, our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini comparison is the best place to start.

Verdict

This is a meaningful upgrade, especially for the free tier. GPT-6 Luna in Free and Go, GPT-6 Sol in paid plans, and Intelligent UI everywhere make ChatGPT more visual and, for many tasks, more practical. You don’t need to do anything to get it. If you’re a free user, try it before deciding whether to pay; if you’re on Plus, you’re already getting the stronger Sol model by default.

FAQ

Is GPT-6 free in ChatGPT?

Yes. Free users get GPT-6 Luna in the Chat tab, rolling out from October 8, 2026. Paid plans get the stronger GPT-6 Sol.

What is the difference between GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna?

Sol is the more capable model used on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise. Luna is the lighter, cheaper model used on Free and Go. OpenAI says both are tuned for everyday conversation.

Can I turn off Intelligent UI?

According to TechCrunch, you can reduce how many visuals ChatGPT adds, similar to other personality settings. Simple questions still get plain text answers.

Is GPT-6 available in Europe?

OpenAI describes the rollout as global and doesn’t list regional exceptions. Rollouts happen in stages, so it may take a little time to reach every account.

Did ChatGPT prices change?

No price change was announced with this update. Go is $8 a month, Plus is $20 and Pro starts at $100 in the US, before any local taxes.
